Chorally, they don’t fool around at Yale. Simon Carrington, a co-founder of The King’s Singers and an excellent conductor, was the director of the university’s 24-voice Schola Cantorum from 2003 to 2009. Masaaki Suzuki, whom we know well as the director of Bach Collegium Japan, has been on the podium for the past four years. Maestro Carrington returned to record this program, performed at New Haven’s Christ Church Episcopal in December, 2011. … It was a lovely concert. The Victoria Mass is lush, full-bodied, and gorgeously phrased…. Christopher Theofanidis’s settings of texts by Whitman, Rumi, Yeats, and his friend Amy Kirsten are clever and highly personable, and this is as handsome a Liszt ‘Ave Maria’ as you’re likely to hear. David Lang’s exploration of the Book of Ecclesiastes is repetitious by design, and interestingly so … ~ Greenfield |
